What we don’t recommend: removing a sash with a tensioned balance still attached. On ES single-hungs, the balance is under load even when the window is down, and releasing it wrong can send the sash into the frame or your hands. If the window is fogged, the glass replacement involves disassembling the sash and resealing it, which is where air and water leaks come from if it’s not seated perfectly.
